It was formed on 14 October 1914 as the 22nd (French Canadian) Battalion, CEF, to ensure French Canadians could serve in their own language during the First World War. The battalion fought with great distinction on the Western Front, taking part in major battles such as Courcelette, Vimy Ridge, Hill 70, Passchendaele, and the Hundred Days, earning a formidable reputation for discipline and courage.

After the war, the battalion was perpetuated in the Permanent Force as The Royal 22nd Regiment in 1920, receiving the “Royal” designation from King George V. During the Second World War, the regiment again served overseas, fighting in Sicily, Italy, and Northwest Europe, notably at Ortona, one of the war’s hardest-fought urban battles.
