Dutz flew in a variety of aircraft, including the D.F.W., Albatros C.III, Albatros C.XII, Halberstadt C.II, etc., multiple entries and stamps throughout the book, containing forty-four pages printed in black ink, the blue front cover with a label on the front with Dutz's name inscribed in pencil, 145 mm x 208 mm, string-bound); Soldbuch (marked with the Luftwaffe eagle on the cover, inscribed \"Soldbuch zugleich Personolausweis Luftwaffe\" below, dual stamped black and white photograph of Dutz with two eyelets, his signature under the photo on the inside front cover, multiple entries and stamps throughout the book, containing twenty-four pages and a four page insert printed in black ink, plus blue cover also printed in black ink, 102 mm x 142 mm, tape repair evident in the binding); Letter from Dutz’s former Squadron Commander, Alwin Kinkelin (dated March 8, 1957, stating that Dutz was shot down on July 16, 1918 during the Reims Offensive. Kinkelin goes on to say that Dutz was examined by a doctor at a field hospital and he determined that Dutz had a fracture at the base of his skull and suffered from severe bruising, severe visual acuity, and a decrease of hearing. This flight is recorded in Dutz’s Flugbuch. Interestingly, Dutz continued to fly missions after suffering these injuries and having these disabilities); forty-five photographs (black and white, one of which is mounted, some with postcard-style backers, thirty-eight outstanding photos of Dutz and his last unit (Schlachtstaffel 25), illustrating airfields, a field burial, comrades, aircraft with tactical numbers at an airfield, a crashed German plane, etc. along with other period subjects and seven photos taken during the Second World War, including three of which illustrate high ranking Luftwaffe officers boarding a Ju 52, along with one illustrating a ranking officer at the Headquarters of Supplemental Reconnaissance Squadron F.); and eight Postcards (with handwritten entries on their reverses). \n\nFootnote: This is a really fantastic grouping belonging to Ludwig Dutz who served in both the First World War and the Second World War. His Militärpass (Military Service Record Booklet) reveals the following about his First World War service: Dutz was born on June 26, 1894 in Lipowitz, Prussia. He joined the military on October 2, 1912. For most of the First World War, he served in various companies of the 21st Infantry Regiment. During this service, he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class 1914. Several battles in France that Dutz participated in with the 21st Infantry Regiment are listed in his Militärpass. By March 1918, he attained the rank of Sergeant. Following his infantry service, Dutzvolunteered for the German Air Service and received training as an aerial gunner and observer. On June 23, 1918, he was awarded the Air Gunner Badge, and on July 5, 1918, he was awarded the Bavarian Military Service Cross 3rd Class with Crown and Swords. From August 9 to November 27, 1918, Dutz served as an aerial gunner with Bayerische Schlachtstaffel 25 (Bavarian Ground-Attack Squadron 25), which was equipped with two-seat fighters. Entries in the Militärpass show that Dutz flew attack missions against Reims, Cambrai, and Flanders. The Militärpass is full of entries and has several paste-in sheets, including a nice battle listing from the year 1918. Dutz flew in a variety of aircraft, including the D.F.W., Albatros C.III, Albatros C.XII, Halberstadt C.II, etc. Dutz was shot down on July 16, 1918 during the Reims Offensive and was later examined by a doctor at a field hospital, the doctor determining that Dutz had a fracture at the base of his skull and suffered from severe bruising, severe visual acuity, and a decrease of hearing but was to recover from his injuries. The Second World War Soldbuch was issued to Dutz on September 2, 1939 at the Bernburg Airbase at which time he held the rank of Feldwebel (Sergeant). The inside cover has a nice large photo of Dutz wearing his administrative official uniform and ribbons for his First World War medals and the War Merit Cross 2nd Class he earned in the Second World War. During the latter, Dutz served in an administrative capacity and received five promotions. His final rank was Stabintendant der Reserve (Reserve Administrator with the equivalent rank of Colonel). From 1939 to 1945, Dutz served as an administrative official with the following units: Bernburg Airbase; Supplemental Reconnaissance Squadron F; Supplemental Reconnaissance Group Nohra; Headquarters of Heavy Flak Battalion (o) West II; Airbase Headquarters A (o) 33\/III in Weimar; and the 1st Battalion of Air Force Signal Regiment 11. The following awards are listed on page 22: the Iron Cross 2nd Class 1914; the Bavarian Military Service Cross with Crown and Swords; the Honour Cross for Combatants with Swords (AKA the Hindenburg Cross); the Combat Observer Badge for Ground-Attack Crew Members; the Wound Badge in Black; and the War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords (which Dutz was awarded on September 1, 1941). This is a remarkable grouping for a soldier of both World Wars. The First World War items are truly remarkable, especially the Militärpass, photos, and flight log. It is very rare to have a flight book in combination with a Militärpass.","brand":"eMedals","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46117432230165,"sku":"G20500","price":1875.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0713\/9105\/2053\/files\/m_282_1.jpg?v=1692857131","url":"https:\/\/www.emedals.com\/products\/a-superb-bavarian-soldbuch-militarpass-flight-log-and-photos-to-ground-attack-gunner-g20500","provider":"eMedals","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
