Oldenburg, Grand Duchy. A House & Merit Order of Peter Frederick Louis, Grand Cross, by Knauer, c.1910

(Haus und Verdienstorden von Herzog Peter Friedrich Ludwig, Großkreuz mit der Silber Krone und Bruststern). Instituted on 27 November 1838 by Paul Friedrich August von Oldenburg. (1841-1918 Issue). A silver, straight-armed cross pattée with white-enamelled arms, centre obverse presents the silvered crowned monogram PFL (Peter Friedrich Ludwig) over a blue-enamelled field, bordered by a ring of red-enamel bearing the inscription EIN GOTT EIN RECHT EINE WAHRHEIT (ONE GOD ONE RIGHT ONE TRUTH), surmounted by a square eyelet attached to a Royal Crown, reverse centre presents a white-enamelled centre shield bearing the hand painted coat of arms of Oldenburg with an ermine coat and crown, the 12 o’clock arm bears the date 17 Jan 1755, the 3 o’clock arm bears the date 21 Mai 1829, the 6 o’clock arm bears the date 21 Nov 1838, the 9 o’clock arm bears the date 6 Jul 1785, measuring 56.66 mm (w) x 93.15 mm (h - inclusive of Imperial Crown with horizontally pierced ball suspension adorned by cross), weighing 42.6 grams, on loop for suspension from period original sash, with red enamel loss from obverse centre border, better than very fine condition. Accompanied by the star of the order, in toned silver, the star body consists of eight main arms each composed of seven rays of various length with ribbed edges, centre obverse presents a round medallion displaying the silver, crowned monogram PFL over a blue enamelled background, circumscribed by a coiled border, surrounded by a ring of red enamel bearing the motto EIN GOTT EIN RECHT EINE WAHRHEIT (ONE GOD ONE RIGHT ONE TRUTH), circumscribed by a border of coil, the reverse centre presents a principle pin assembly, maker marked KNAUER on pin, measuring 81.53 mm (w) x 84.29 mm (h), weighing 53.8 grams, and in better than very fine condition. 

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
