Oldenburg, Grand Duchy. A House and Merit Order of Peter Frederick Louis in Gold, Commander, c.1885

(Haus und Verdienstorden von Herzog Peter Friedrich Ludwig). Issued 1838-1918. A cross pattee constructed of Gold (hollow), with white enameled arms; the obverse with a central blue enameled medallion depicting a Gold crowned cipher of Peter Friedrich Ludwig, surrounded by a Gold ring and a ring of red enamels, inscribed Ein Gott-Ein Recht-Eine Wahrheit (German - One God, One Righteousness, One Truth); the reverse with white enameled arms inscribed with dates, and with a central white enameled medallion depicting the Oldenburg coat of arms; suspended from a hollow Gold crown suspension, with a double Gold loop; suspended from a period original neck ribbon; measuring 49.47 mm (w) x 48.92 mm (h); weighing 28.8 grams; the rear enameled disk slightly loose in its fitting, slight compression of obverse crown; in overall extremely fine condition.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
