United States. Two Commemorative Table Medals

National Capital Sesquicentennial Official Commemorative Medal 1800-1950 (bronze with a copper-coloured gilt, unmarked but known to have been struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia, obverse illustrating the Statue of Armed Freedom that can be found atop the Capitol Building, the statue (originally named “Freedom Triumphant in War and Peace” and is also known as the "Statue of Freedom") depicting a female figure wearing a military helmet and holding a sheathed sword in her right hand, with a laurel wreath and shield in her left hand, framed by a circle of thirteen stars, surrounded by the inscription "NATIONAL CAPITAL SESQUICENTENNIAL 1800 - WASHINGTON - 1950", reverse illustrating President John Adams standing before five seated figures, inscribed "PRESIDENT JOHN ADAMS ADDRESSES 6th CONGRESS WASHINGTON NOVEMBER 22 1800" to his right, surrounded by the inscription "SIXTH CONGRESS 1800 - EIGHTY-FIRST CONGRESS 1950", inscribed "150th ANNIVERSARY ESTABLISHMENT OF PERMANENT NATIONAL CAPITAL" below and engraver marked "T.J.", 41.3 mm, accompanied by its note of explanation, in its cardboard box of issue and and shipping container); and Larkin Company of Buffalo, New York Fiftieth Anniversary Commemorative Medal 1875-1925 (bronze, maker marked "WHITEHEAD-HOAG" on the edge, obverse illustrating the left-facing bust of John Durrant Larkin, the American business magnate who pioneered the mail-order business model, inscribed "John D. Larkin" in running script and engraver marked "KILENYLI", reverse illustrating the various buildings of the Larkin Company complex, with an image of the company's original building surmounted by the inscription "FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY" above, the company's logo flanked by the dates "1875" on the left and "1925" on the right framed by an open-ended wreath of laurel leaves below, 76 mm). Near mint and better than very fine, respectively.


This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
