H.L. PALMER 2-C.M.R. Footnote: Henry Lorne Palmer was born on January 4, 1879 in Barrie, Simcoe County, Ontario. He signed his Attestation as a Private (297) with D Squadron, 2nd Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles, on December 12, 1901 in Toronto, Ontario, at the age of 22 years and 11 months, naming his next-of-kin as his father, Jonathan Palmer of Toronto, stating that he belonged to an Active Militia, the Governor General's Horse Guards, that he was Single, that his religion was Church of England and that his trade was that of Barber or Photographer. He disembarked at Durham, South Africa on February 18th or 25th, 1902 and was discharged from service in August 1902. After the war and being a veteran of the conflict, he was entitled to and did file a Land Application with the federal government. For his South African service, he was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with two clasps, Transvaal and South Africa 1902. Thirteen years after his South Africa War discharge, Palmer enlisted for service during the First World War. He signed his Attestation Paper as a Private (901) with the 2nd Division, Eaton Machine Gun Battery, on April 5, 1915 in Toronto, at the age of 35, naming his next-of-kin as his wife, Mary J. Palmer of Toronto, stating that he had four years' service with 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles and service with the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles in South Africa, that he was Married, that his religion was Wesleyan (Methodist). He was briefly hospitalized after his enlistment, in Toronto for two weeks, from April 28 to May 10, 1915, treated for "Gonorrhea". He embarked Montreal, Quebec aboard the S.S. Metagama on June 4, 1915, arriving in England on the 14th. Private Palmer was admitted to a Tent Hospital at St. Martin's Plain on July 6, 1915 with "Syphilis", then transferred seventeen days later to Lichfield Central Hospital on July 23rd, where he would remain for the next three weeks, before being discharged to Shorncliffe on August 13th. Three and a half months later, he would seek hospitalization for a second time, as he was admitted to Fairfield Hospital at Broadstairs with "Bronchitis" on December 1, 1915. The following month, Private Palmer "paraded sick at Folkestone, Jan. 24th, complaining of (a) sore back and was passing blood" and was admitted to Moore Barracks Hospital at Shorncliffe the same day, with a case of "Hemorrhoids". Two weeks later, he was transferred to the Canadian Convalescent Hospital, Monks Horton on February 8th, where he would recuperate for the next three months, before being transferred to Military Hospital at Shorncliffe on May 9, 1916, then discharged from hospitalization on June 11th. He was struck off strength to Canada, embarking for Canada aboard the S.S. Missanabie on September 23, 1916. Private Henry Lorne Palmer was discharged from service on October 1, 1916 at Quebec City, Quebec, "by reason of Cessation of Working Pay", his conduct and character noted as "Fair". For his First World War service, he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He died st Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, on July 27, 1963, at the age of 84.
