Canada; 1914-15 Star (411027 Pte D. S. ROUGH. P.P.C.L.I.); Victory Medal (411027 L. CPL. D.S. ROUGH. P.P.C.L.I.); and Memorial Cross, GRV (A.11027. L./CPL. D.S. ROUGH.). Naming is officially impressed on the Star and VM and engraved on the MC. Un-mounted, the Star and VM with replacement ribbons, the MC with its original ribbon, contact marks, better than very fine. Accompanied by his father, John Weir Rough's Toronto Snowshoe Club Award Medal (two-piece construction, silver, obverse engraved "TORONTO SHOWSHOE CLUB", reverse engraved "1/4 MILE RACE / WON BY J.W. ROUGH / FEB. 24, 1883", 39.8 mm, original ribbon with crossed snowshoes clasp affixed, engraved silver suspension and hanger with pinback).
Footnote: Douglas Stark Rough was born on August 30, 1892 in Toronto, Ontario, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Weir Rough. He signed his Attestation Paper (A.11027) on March 16, 1915 (later addended to the 31st) in Montreal, Quebec, at the age of 22, naming his next-of-kin as his father, John Weir Rough of Montreal, stating that he has five years' previous service with the Victoria Rifles, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Insurance Clerk. He is also acknowledged as having the service number 411027, although his Attestation Paper states only A.11027 as his service number, as there are no other records on file for him. A.11027 Lance Corporal Douglas Stark Rough was with the 2nd (University) Company, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry when he was Killed in Action on August 12, 1915 at Armentieres, at the age of 22, eighteen days shy of his twenty-third birthday. He is buried in Houplines Communal Cemetery, Nord, France, Grave Reference: I. C. 38., located two kilometres east of the centre of Armentieres and is commemorated on page 35 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.
