A Fenian Raid and First War Father and Son Welsh Family Group

Private Charles Welsh, 16th (Prince Edward Infantry) Battalion (father): Canada General Service Medal 1866-1970, 1 Clasp - FENIAN RAID 1866 (Pte. T. Welsh, 16th. Bn.); and Charles Andrew Welsh (son): British War Medal (3105028 PTE. C.A. WELSH. C.O.R.). Naming is officially impressed on both medals, the "e" in the surname on the CGSM having been re-punched over an "s". Un-mounted, original ribbons, contact marks, better than very fine. Footnote: Private Thomas Welsh was born on February 9, 1846, shown on the roll of the 260 man 16th (Prince Edward Infantry) Battalion and is listed on page 93 of the "Canada General Service Medal Roll, 1866-70" by John Thyen, entitled to the Fenian Raid 1866 clasp. He is documented as having been posted to Kingston, Ontario from June 3 to June 20, 1866, with an "attack expected". Charles Andrew Welsh was born on July 1, 1879 in Picton, Ontario. He was a resident of Picton when he signed his Attestation Paper as a Private (3105028) with the 1st Depot Battalion, 2nd Ontario Regiment in Toronto, Ontario, on October 1, 1917, at the age of 38, naming his next-of-kin as his mother, Rebecca Welsh of Picton, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was not married and that his trade was that of Sign Painter. The doctor noted during his medical examination that Welsh had a tattoo on his right thumb and finger. It is noted, that on the 1901 Census, he is shown as being twenty five years old, so he may have adjusted his year of his birth, in order to be accepted into the army.
