Italy, Kingdom. A Medal for the Wars of Independence & the Unity of Italy, 2 Clasps, c.1866

(Medaglia per le guerre d'Indipendenza e l'Unità d'Italia). Instituted 1865. Circular medal in silver, obverse bear the left facing head portrait of Vittorio Emanuele II and “VITTORIO EMANUELE II RE D’ITALIA” (VITTORIO EMANUELE II KING OF ITALY) with the maker mark “CANZANI” at the bottom of the portrait neck, the reverse centre bears a crowned woman figure holding a spear and shield and is inscribed with “GUERRE PER L’ INDIPENDENZA E L’UNITA D’ITALIA” (WARS FOR INDEPENDENCE AND UNITY OF ITALY), measuring 31.84 mm (w) x 37.77 mm (h), on a green, white and red striped ribbon. Accompanied by two clasps, the first inscribed with 1860-61, the second inscribed with 1859, both with laurel design, measuring 37.74 mm (w) x 6.48 mm (h), very fine.

 

Footnote: The 1859 clasp indicated the War against Austria and the 1860-61 clasp indicated Garibaldi’s Expeditions.
