Italy, Fascist Era. An Order of the Roman Eagle, 4th Class Officer, by Godet, c.1942

Type I (1942-1943). Civil Division. In silver gilt with red, white and blue enameled centrepieces, mounted to a silver with red and green enameled base, unmarked, 38 mm (w) x 41 mm (h) inclusive of its ball suspension, large rosette on its original ribbon, intact enamels, scattered gilt wear on the centrepiece rings, accompanied by its Ribbon Bar (5.7 mm (w) x 5.5 mm (h) silvered insignia affixed to the ribbon, metal button hole attachment maker marked ""GEBR. GODET & Co. BERLIN). Near extremely fine.

Footnote: The Fascist Order of the Roman Eagle founded in 1942 with civil and military divisions was abolished in Italy in 1944, although it continued to be awarded by Benito Mussolini in the short-lived Italian Social Republic until 1945. It was awarded in five classes: 1st Class Knight Grand Cross, 2nd Class Grand Officer, 3rd Class Commander, 4th Class Officer and 5th Class Knight.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
