Sweden, Kingdom. An Order of Amarante, Grand Master's Star, c.1880

(Stora Amaranterorden). Institution Date of Kristina Day, July 24, 1760. A large embroidered breast star, consisting of a silver Maltese Cross with detailed silver bullion workmanship, with clusters of six golden rays in each quadrant, obverse centre presenting a centre monogram ""AA"" for Alexandra Amaranta with Swedish Royal Crown on blue cloth background, ""MD"" in golden threat denoting ‘MEMORIA DULCIS (Sweet memory), reverse with paper backing and possibly museum tag, with black cloth flaps for attachment, measuring 103 mm (w) x 102 mm (h), toning to silver, very fine.

Footnote: Under a backdrop of Swedish political turmoil, the Order of Amarante was instituted to act as an avenue and outlet for all social classes to interact and unite. The order is continued today and inducts new members every year at their main lodge is in Stockholm. This order should not be mistaken for the Masonic Order of the same name revised by in the United States. 


This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
