Sweden, Kingdom. An Order of Vasa in Gold, I Class Commander, c.1900

(Kungliga Vasaorden). Instituted on 26 May 1772 by King Gustav III. (Issued 1772-1975). A superb cross od Dutch manufacture in Gold, featuring a white enameled Maltese cross with ball finials, with a Gold crown of Sweden in each quadrant, obverse roundel is charged with a vase and a sheaf encircled by a red enameled band featuring the inscription “GUSTAF DEN III INST. MDCCLXXII” (“INSTITUTED BY GUSTAV III MDCCLXXII”), with mirrored reverse, adorned by large crown featuring enameled jewels and detailing, Dutch Gold hallmarked on cross 585 denoting Gold content, measures 54.90 mm (w) x 83.06 mm (h - inclusive of crown with horizontally pierced ball suspension and cross), weighs 27.8 grams, on replacement silver loop and period neck ribbon, otherwise near mint.


This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
