(Orden al Mérito Naval). Instituted in 1866 by Queen Isabella II/Isabel II. White Distinction. Type II. 1886-1931 issue. A finely manufactured sash badge in silver gilt, consisting of an enameled white Latin Cross with elegant gilt edges, featuring a clasp on the 12 o’clock arm, the obverse exhibiting an enameled blue anchor, with plain reverse applique in white enamels, surmounted by a typical of time period Spanish Royal Crown, measuring 34.31 mm (w) x 66.30 mm (h - inclusive of crown suspension), on the original sash ribbon, no enamel chipping, extremely fine; accompanied by the star of the Order in silver gilt, a nicely beaded eight pointed star with rounded tips, obverse center exhibiting an enameled white Latin Cross with a clasp on the 12 o’clock arm, exhibiting a nicely enameled blue anchor, surmounted by typically Spanish Royal Crown in red enamels, the reverse with pin assembly and dual retaining pins, measuring 92.06 mm (w) x 91.41 mm (h),one slight enamel flake to left arm, otherwise in very fine condition. 


This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
