(Orden de Cisneros). Instituted 1944 by General Francisco Franco. 1944-1977 issued. In bronze gilt, an early sash badge consisting of a red enameled four-armed Point Cross with ball finials, featuring crossed arrows in each quadrant also in bronze gilt, with obverse center depicting a typical of time period enameled black eagle, with plain reverse, measuring 53.69 mm (w) x 59.57 mm (h - inclusive of integral ring), on period sash, very fine. Accompanied by a bronze gilded breast star with obverse featuring a larger enameled red and black badge of the Order, reverse with pin assembly and dual stays, measuring 72.51 (w) x 71.61 mm (h), extremely fine condition.
Footnote: The Order of Cisneros was instituted in Spain by General Francisco Franco on March 8, 1944. It was created after the end of the Spanish Civil War to reward those who served Franco during the war, and collaborated on the establishment of the new government. This Order is the civil Order that has been awarded the most among Spanish citizens. No awards have been awarded since 1977, when the Order was unofficially extinct.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
