(Orden Civil de Alfonso XII). Instituted 1902. 1902-1931 issued. One of the 237 Grand Crosses awarded during its life span, a fine sash badge in silver gilt with finely enameled purple four-armed cross, featuring three roundish rays applique in purple enamels in each quadrant, with large obverse centrepiece composing of a silver eagle surrounded by the inscription  A X II ALTIORA PETO (I aspire to the Highest) also in silver, surrounded also by a silver gilded wreath of a palm branch and a green enameled laurel branch, surmounted by a red enameled typical of time period Spanish royal crown, depicting an enameled Spanish coat of arms in the bottom, plain reverse, measuring 45.45 mm (w) x 49.89 mm (h - inclusive of the integral ball), with minor lost of red and purple enamels, accompanied by original silk sash ribbon, extremely fine.          
Footnote: The Civil Order of Alfonso XII was founded in Spain by King Alfonso XIII on May 23, 1902. The Order was awarded to either Spanish or foreign citizens in recognition of meritorious services within the fields of education, science, culture, teaching, and research. The Order was abolished by the Second Republic in 1931, and it was replaced by the Civil Order of Alfonso XII in 1939.
