Portugal, Kingdom. An Order of the Immaculate Conception of Vila Viçosa, I Class Grand Cross Badge, c.1900

(Ordem de Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Vila Viçosa). Instituted in 1818. Multi-piece construction, in silver gilt with blue and white enamels, measuring 61.8 mm (w) x 87 mm (h) inclusive of its crown suspension, without ribbon, obverse missing two of the nine small white enamelled stars, chipping and crazing evident in the white enamels on the rays on both sides, better than fine.

 

Footnote: The Order of the Immaculate Conception of Vila Viçosa was instituted on February 6, 1818 and discontinued on October 15, 1910 as a Portuguese Order, but retained as a Dynastic Order of the House of Braganza, the former Portuguese Royal Family. It was awarded for services rendered to the Royal House in four grades: Grand Cross, Commander, Knight and Servant.
