Italy, Kingdom. A Case for a Grand Cross of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta

This is a very well-preserved case of issue for a Grand Cross of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, accommodating a breast star and cross with neck ribbon. The frame is constructed of heavy card stock with a faux textured red leather exterior. The obverse lid is embossed with a white Maltese Cross. The interior of the lid features a padded, white, satin-type liner embossed with a maker’s mark of “Odoardo Ragaioli, Giojelliere, Roma”. Stitched to the underside of the liner is a fully intact hinge cover constructed of red satin. Set into the interior is a depressed and slotted purple felt medal bed accommodating both of the aforementioned decorations. The case was opened with a magnetic metal spring catch with an exterior stud release that has since been lost, however it retains its functional magnetic metal hinge. The case measures 128 mm (w) x 275 mm (l) x 32 mm (h). In addition to the missing spring release, minor, age-appropriate wear and fatigue is evident to the exterior, but the case is in an otherwise very fine condition.
