Footnote: The intention of creating a medal for "the current war" was expressed by the Ministry of War on November 4, 1941 and reaffirmed on July 3, 1945 and November 17, 1948. However, it was not until May 6, 1959, after Italy had become a Republic, that the award was finally instituted for those who had served a minimum of three months in the armed forces, had been wounded, had accomplished outstanding feats of arms or had been awarded the Valore Militare or the Croce al Merito di Guerra. The first version was produced by Bomisa-Aielli, while this second version is anonymous and not often found.
