Description
Description
Instituted in 1818. In silver gilt with seven white enamelled arms, both centrepieces in Gold with blue enamels, each with painted images of the saints, illustrating St. Michael the Archangel slaying Satan on the obverse and St. George the patron saint of England slaying a dragon on the reverse, measuring 45.5 mm (w) x 66 mm (h) inclusive of its integral ring, intact enamels, on its full-length original neck ribbon, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George is a British order of chivalry founded on April 28, 1818 by George, Prince Regent, later King George IV, while he was acting as regent for his father, King George III. It is named in honour of two military saints, St. Michael and St. George. The Order of St. Michael and St. George was originally awarded to those holding commands or high position in the Mediterranean territories acquired in the Napoleonic Wars, and was subsequently extended to holders of similar office or position in other territories of the British Empire. It is at present awarded to men and women who hold high office or who render extraordinary or important non-military service in a foreign country, and can also be conferred for important or loyal service in relation to foreign and Commonwealth affairs.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
