United Kingdom. A Royal Flying Corps Tobacco Jar, by Macintyre for Twining
Fabricated from a white ceramic with a dimpled finish on the exterior, the front with a shield trimmed in gold-coloured ink and bearing the Royal Flying Corps insignia with the inscription "PER ARDUA AD ASTRA" (Through Adversity to the Stars) below in gold-coloured ink, the detailing in the wings, wreath, crown and drop shadow in the RFC lettering in brown ink, the top and bottom side edges, along with the opening trimmed in a band of gold-coloured ink. The top and bottom edges, the lid and interior have a clear glaze finish. The opening of the jar has three slots in a triangular formation along with an interior lip, the lip designed to fit the smooth-finished ceramic lid, the underside of the lid with a red ceramic seal. The lid incorporates a three-pronged brass lock on top and mounted in place via a large screwpost with brass tightener, and secured to a lead base embedded in the lid. When the brass lock is inserted into the three slots, fitted into the lip, moved to either side and the tightener applied, it ensures a solid seal to protect the contents of the jar. The bottom is maker marked "MACINTYRE BURSLEM ENGLAND" in brown ink, marked "Pembroke." in black ink above and marked with "MADE FOR FRANCIS TWINING OXFORD" in black ink below, along with being coded in blue ink "B1558". The raised lip on the bottom has two forest green felt pads added. The jar measures 119 mm in diameter x 113 mm in height, not including the brass tightener, exhibiting light soiling in the dimpled finish, along with wear spots evident in the gold-coloured trim on the top edge and opening. It is free of chipping and crazing, the insignia and text on the shield immaculate. Very fine.
