Officially created on December 24, 1899, the regiment was based on members of standing Yeomanry regiments, but also contained a large contingent of middle or upper class English volunteers. In Ireland, 120 men were recruited in February 1900. During the Boer War of 1899–1901, the Imperial Yeomanry was raised to permit Yeomen to serve overseas. The Royal Wiltshire Regiment provided three companies to this force (1st, 2nd and 63rd). In 1900 the regiment represented the Yeomanry cavalry at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia. On April 17, 1901, the regiment was renamed as the Royal Wiltshire Imperial Yeomanry (Prince of Wales's Own Royal Regiment) and reorganized into four squadrons and a machine gun section. It was officially disbanded in 1908. On April 1, 1908, the regiment was renamed as the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry (Prince of Wales's Own Royal Regiment) and transferred to the Territorial Force, trained and equipped as hussars.
