Description
Description
Hardcover, navy blue cloth cover, the text and insignia on both the front cover and the spine in gold-coloured ink, the large Maltese Cross in the form of a white label on the front cover, entitled "Historical Records of The Maltese Corps of the British Army" complied by Major A.G. Chesney, South Staffordshire Regiment, Adjutant, Royal Malta Regiment of Militia, published by William Clowes and Sons, Limited of London in 1897. This book is based primarily upon records available to the author in his capacity as Adjutant of the Royal Malta Regiment of Militia, and from contemporary local records. The narrative covers the period 1798 to 1895 and describes actions in which Maltese units were engaged: e.g. removing the French from the island (1800), the expedition to Egypt (1801), and the seizure of Elba (1801), the landings in Sicily, and the second seizure of Elba (1808). Volunteers from the Royal Malta Fencible Artillery took part in the Egypt campaign of 1882. Biographical notes regarding various officers and NCOs are scattered throughout the text making this book a useful source for military historians and genealogists alike. It begins with a Preface, followed by a Table of Contents and a List of Illustrations, with a three line Errata slip inserted in front of the Table of Contents. The book contains seven chapters: I - Introduction; II - The Maltese Light Infantry 1800-1802; III - The Maltese Pioneers 1800-1802, The Maltese Militia 1801, The Maltese Provincial Battalions 1802-1815; IV - The Royal Malta Regiment 1805-1811; V - The Royal Maltese Military Artificers, and Sappers and Miners 1806-1817, Froberg's Regiment, Mutiny at Ricasoli; VI - The Royal Malta Fencible Regiment 1815-1861, The Royal Malta Fencible Pensioners Company 1854-1861, The Royal Malta Fencible Artillery 1861; VII - The Maltese Militia 1852-1857, The Malta Dockyard Battalion of Artillery 1853-1864, The Royal Malta Regiment of Militia 1889, The Malta Militia Division of Submarine Miners, Royal Engineers 1892. It concludes with three Appendices (I - Establishments and Rates of Pay of the Royal Malta Fencibles and Royal Malta Artillery; II - Establishments and Rates of Pay of the Royal Malta Regiment of Militia, 1889; III - List of Maltese, arranged Alphabetically, who have Served, or are Serving, in the British Army) and a twelve page Index. The book contains 222 pages, printed in black ink, along with twenty-three superb black and white or colour plates inserted at various intervals throughout, printed in black ink or four-colour inks, all pages and plates on a very thick white paper stock, the previous owner's signature in blue ink on the inside front cover, measuring 140 mm (w) x 227 mm (h) x 42 (d). There is moisture damage apparent on the front cover which has caused undulation and bubbling, the lower right corner of which appears pinched, with a good proportion of the Maltese Cross label lost to time, the moisture damage also involving the inside front cover endpaper, the area between the two having experienced separation and exposes the underlying substructure of the book, a few pages are loose versus the binding, with some foxing and fraying existing on the edges of the pages, however, the majority of the pages and plates are unaffected by moisture contact and remain clean and legible. Fair.
