Germany, Weimar Republic. A Silver Cigarette Case to Major von Wangenheim, Advisor to Chiang Kai-shek

(Silbernes Zigarettenetui). A rare and well-preserved cigarette case dedicated to Major von Wangenhein, an instructor of the Lehrbrigade, formed in 1929 as an instructional unit for the fledgling Chinese Army under Chiang Kai-shek. Constructed of silver, the exterior features a raised and exceptionally well-detailed dragon decorating both the front and back. Engraved onto the front is an inscription of “NANKING, 1929”, along with the names of a number of German officers on von Wangenheim’s staff. It opens with a functional spring catch with exterior stud release and a functional hinge. The interior retains dual side loops for the accommodation of a band, which has since been lost. It is double-stamped with a maker’s mark of “ZEEWO”, as well as a Chinese content mark. Included is a typewritten label indicating that the case was presented to von Wangenheim during his time on the staff of a German delegation advising the Republic of China. It measures 110 mm (w) x 80 mm (h) and weighs 137 grams. In addition to the missing interior band, minor, age-appropriate tarnishing is also apparent. This unique piece of Sino-German history is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
