This is a fine grouping of medals, decorations, and awards, to Kriegsmarine sailor Werner Groth, consisting of an Iron Cross 1939 First and Second Class, as well as a Minesweeper badge. The Iron Cross 1939 First Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1939 1. Klasse); a white metal cross pattée of multi-piece constructed with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a white metal ribbed border; he obverse with a raised central mobile swastika with the re-institution date “1939” in raised numbering on the lower arm; the reverse with the original institution date “1813” in raised numbering on the lower arm; the reverse plain, with a slender banjo style pinback, a barrel hinge, and a round wire catch; slightly curved; measuring 44.25 mm x 44.18 mm; weighing 21.0 grams. The Iron Cross 1939 Second Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse); a white metal cross pattée of multi-piece constructed with a blackened iron core (magnetic) within a white metal ribbed border; on loop for suspension; missing the ribbon; the obverse with a raised central mobile swastika with the re-institution date “1939” in raised numbering on the lower arm; the reverse with the original institution date “1813” in raised numbering on the lower arm; measuring 44.15 mm x 43.94 mm; weighing 20.6 grams; accompanied by its medal ribbon bar and a separate ribbon for attachment to the uniform; overall the gilding on the Minesweeper badge has worn off but the silvering is well preserved, the Iron Cross 1939 First Class depicts attractive patina with moderate signs of wear on the blackened core. The Iron Cross 1939 Second Class depicts dark patina on the frame with signs of wear on the core. The ribbon bar is well preserved with limited soiling, with the Iron Cross 1939 ribbon being faded from exposure to the sun. Overall better than very fine condition. (C: 45)
