German Red Cross (Deutsches Rotes Kreuz) Leader's Dagger

This dagger was adopted in 1938 and was authorized for all officials with the rank of Wachtfuhrer (officer or non-commissioned officer in charge of a guard) and higher. It measures 380 mm, with the scabbard on, featuring a 250 mm nickel-plated steel blade, with unsharpened edges, remaining bright and crisp, having a very sharp, near perfect needle-like tip. The blade is unmarked and retains its beautiful crossgraining, with faint scratches, common to extraction and return to the scabbard, high polished, natural shine, in extremely fine condition. The black pebbled leather washer at the crossguard junction is in intact and remains supple in texture. The pommel, crossguard and pebbled scabbard are finished in a dark nickel plate. The oval langet incorporates the distinctive DRK insignia (the eagle with a swastika on its chest standing upon the International Red Cross symbol). The orange synthetic grip features a series of ten parallel ridges, smooth and free of chipping but remains loose-fitting. The wide pommel is connected at the base via a large six-pointed screw, complemented by an aluminum portepee with fraying and severing of the one cord. The scabbard is straight, exhibiting a nice pebbling effect, with contact marks and gilt loss of the nickel plating throughout, along with some denting from active usage. The throat is relatively thick, retained by two reverse screws and displaying contact marks. The two bands are unadorned, with the affixed scabbard suspension holes being rectangular. The detachable double strap fabric hanger is constructed of aluminum facing edged with red strips and sewn to gray velvet backs, with the oval buckles bearing no design, with functioning spring-loaded clips attached at the scabbard end. A fine example of this type of dagger, in extremely fine condition. Footnote: The German Red Cross Agency was organized under the Reich Ministry of the Interior and was a nationally recognized volunteer organization with the mission of assisting in civil disasters. Although the members, both male and female, were on a non-salaried basis, they were supervised by a full-time cadre of uniformed salaried leaders, as per the previous owner of this particular dagger.
