(Wehrmacht R36 Entfernungsmesser). A rare and extremely well-preserved Wehrmacht R36 stereoscopic rangefinder, adapted for use against both airborne and ground-based targets, the rangefinder consisting of a body tube 112 cm in length, constructed of non-magnetic metal with a leathered texture and black painted finish, with customizable dual eyepieces, each of which is adjustable to plus or minus five degrees, the optics are in a fully functional condition and retain clearly-legible range and height numbers, flanked on each side by two functional knobs allowing for adjustment of the range and height of the view, the ends of the body tube featuring lenses with integrated sliding covers, with brown leather endpieces complete with handle straps, the body tube with dual silvered metal grooved rings accommodating an accompanying stand, constructed of tan-painted magnetic metal, consisting of three pieces, including dual supports with metal springs and slots into which the rangefinder securely fits, with a third stabilizing bar featuring integrated screws to securely hold the apparatus in place, the supports with magnetic metal keys on a length of chain, securing the stand to a V-shaped shoulder harness, constructed of thick strips of wool around which is fitted a black boiled leather lining, tightly held together by pieces of hand stitching, with three adjustable straps bearing magnetic metal buckles to affix the entire setup to the wearer, including a magnetic metal case into which the disassembled stand is inserted, featuring an adjustable brown leather strap and opening with a functional snap button, with dual wool cushions on the interior of the lid providing protection for the contents, measuring 120 mm (w) x 335 mm (h), the body tube of the rangefinder is maker marked “Carl Zeiss, Jena” with serial number “96144”, while the stand is marked with code “fwq” for maker Saalfelder Apparatebau GmbH, Saalfeld, and the interior of the lid is similarly marked “fwq” along with a stamp bearing a Wehrmacht-style German national eagle and number “326”, the body tube demonstrates some loss of paint, and the rubber guard formerly adorning the eyepieces as well as a leather shoulder strap have been lost, while there is similarly some loss of paint evident to the stand case and material fatigue of the harness, otherwise in complete and better than fine condition.
