Germany, Imperial. A Rare & Exceptional Naval Cadet Dirk, by Carl Eickhorn

(Kaiserlische Marine Dolch für Applikanten). A rare and high-quality Imperial German Navy Applikanten (Cadet) dirk, measuring 63.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 48 cm-long nickel-plated magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and lower edge. The obverse of the blade features a striking acid-etched design consisting of a central fouled anchor topped by a German State Crown, flanked by an inscription of “MIT GOTT FÜR KAISER U. REICH” (“WITH GOD FOR KAISER AND EMPIRE”) in Gothic script, and enclosed by a ship and arabesque designs. The reverse bears an analogous acid-etched design similarly consisting of a central fouled anchor topped by a German State Crown, flanked by arabesque and naval imagery. Notably, the depressed backgrounds of the blade decorations retain period-original bluing, effectively highlighting the inscriptions and imagery, and reflecting the dirk’s exceptional craftsmanship. The blade completes on the reverse ricasso with a maker’s mark in the form of the logo of Carl Eickhorn, Solingen, in a pattern used until 1921. The blade sits secured within a one-piece gilded bronze hilt. The obverse of the crossguard features a clamshell set onto a functional swivel hinge, decorated with a raised fouled anchor. Also emanating from the crossguard is a raised German State Crown. The shallow handle grip features a ribbed handle, and completes with a rounded integral pommel nut. It is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a boiled black leather shaft. Bronze fittings are secured to both the tip and throat. The latter features a downward-pointing hook which emanates from the side for the accommodation of an optional frog. The former is included, and is constructed of multiple pieces of pressed black leather, securely stitched into a loop for belt suspension. The set demonstrates minor issues consistent with age and wear, including sporadic tarnishing of the blade, spots of finish loss to the hilt, and slight material fatigue to the leather elements, including the severing of the frog’s loop. This rare and superb dirk is in an overall extremely fine condition.
