(Fliegerkosmonaut der DDR Etui). Constructed of a wooden frame with a faux maroon leather exterior, the interior with a white satin-type lid liner and intact hinge cover, with a red felt medal bed, opening with a functional metal hinge, unmarked, measuring 87 mm (w) x 108 mm (l) x 28 mm (h), in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: An exceptionally rare award, the East German Cosmonaut Decoration was established to recognize space flights by citizens of the German Democratic Republic (DDR) as part of the Soviet Interkosmos program. However, only one East German cosmonaut, Sigmund Jähn, ventured to space, resulting in a surplus of approximately six decorations.
