Description
Description
(SS-Totenkopfverbände Waffenrock). This is an extremely well-preserved SS-Totenkopfverbände dress tunic, constructed of smooth black wool. The tunic features a collar fully trimmed with alternating black thread and silver aluminum wire piping, flanked on each side by tabs, each measuring 40 mm (w) x 55 mm (l) and similarly trimmed with black thread and silver aluminum wire. The right tab bears a hand-embroidered silver aluminum wire Totenkopf above a number “7”, while the right tab is pinned with a single silvered bronze rank pip, indicating a rank of Unterscharführer. The right shoulder is adorned with a board constructed of cardboard-reinforced black wool, the obverse of which bears two bands of interwoven black thread and silver aluminum wire. The board is attached to the tunic by machine stitching at the outer edge and by a pebbled aluminum button at the inner edge. It measures 20 mm (w) x 115 mm (l), with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) label pasted to the reverse, clearly marked with a manufacturer code of “A4/91” and a serial number of “25958”. Stitched into the upper left arm is a SS-style NSDAP armband, constructed of a red wool base and trimmed at each side with black rayon tresses. The armband has a central white rayon disk, 90 mm in diameter, overlaid by a mobile swastika constructed of multiple pieces of black rayon. The left arm completes with a cuff title, constructed of black rayon and trimmed at each edge with silver aluminum wire bands, with an Fraktur inscription of “OBERBAYERN” (“UPPER BAVARIA”) in hand-embroidered silver aluminum wire. The cuff of each arm is rolled up to a depth of 145 mm and held in place by machine stitching.
Each breast flap bears two pockets, opening with stylized horizontal flaps with reinforced buttonholes meeting a pebbled aluminum button. Inside of the lower left pocket is a short rayon strap through which is looped a magnetic metal ring. All pocket buttons are marked on the reverse with Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logos, SS insignia, and manufacturer codes “65/37”. The breast flaps are closed with four pebbled aluminum buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left flap. All breast buttons are marked on the reverse with Reichszeugmeisterei logos, SS insignia, and manufacturer codes “506/39”. The exterior features are completed by four reverse belt hooks constructed of pebbled, silvered zink, all of which are marked with Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM), SS insignia, and maker codes “36/38”. The interior is fully lined by black cotton throughout the torso, which transitions into white cotton through the arms. There is a single interior pocket, located at the upper left breast, overlaid by a black ink stamp with an illegible maker’s mark along with the city of “Coburg”. Inside the pocket is a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) label, securely affixed with machine stitching, clearly bearing a manufacturer code of “D2/60218” and a serial number of “061049”. Each armpit has an integrated black cotton loop, while the upper back is stamped in white ink with sizes of “44, 98,74, 70, 86, 85”. The left sleeve is also marked “M174” in black ink. The tunic measures approximately 435 mm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 625 mm and an overall body length of 695 mm. There is a small patch of mothing to the lower back exterior, one of the two pieces of stitching holding in place the right cuff has been lost, and there is some tearing of the sleeve linings near the armpits. The tunic is in an otherwise extremely fine condition.
