Germany, SS. A 4th SS Polizei Panzergrenadier Division Unterscharführer M43 Tropical Field Tunic
(Waffen-SS Waffenrock M43 für Unterscharführer der 4. SS-Polizei-Panzergrenadier-Division). A rare and very well-preserved Waffen-SS M43 tropical field tunic for an Unterscharführer who served with the 4th SS Polizei Panzergrenadier Division. Constructed of a khaki-tan cotton twill, the tunic features a turned-down collar which transitions into double lapels, and is flanked by tabs. Each constructed of black wool with buckram cores and measuring 40 mm (w) x 55 mm (l), the right side insignia tab bears dual machine-embroidered silver-grey Sig runes, while the left side rank tab is pinned with a single silvered pip. The shoulders are flanked by straps constructed of black wool, trimmed with meadow-green piping, and bordered by fine gold bullion wire tresses. Each measuring 48 mm (w) x 115 mm (l), the straps are secured in place with integral loops at the outer edge through which are fitted integral straps which emanate from the reverse, and with pebbled zink buttons on the inner edge. Stitched onto the upper left sleeve is an insignia consisting of a black rayon backer bearing a machine-embroidered, khaki-tan, SS-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 82 mm (w) x 42 mm (h) overall. Also stitched onto the left arm is a cuff title constructed of a ribbed black rayon base, trimmed with silver aluminum wire tresses along both edges, and bearing a machine-embroidered silver-grey inscription of “SS-POLIZEI-DIVISION”. Of the style produced from 1943 onward, the cuff title measures 28 mm in width. Set into the breast flaps are four non-pleated pockets closing with straight horizontal flaps with reinforced buttonholes meeting pebbled zink buttons. Three sets of vertically-arranged threaded loops are set over top of the top left pocket for the accommodation of decorations with vertical pinbacks. It closes with four pebbled zink buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left flap. The interior is unlined and demonstrates no markings. It measures approximately 46 cm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 54 cm, and an overall body length of 68 cm. The exterior demonstrates minor, sporadic soiling, but the tunic is otherwise free of wear or damage and remains in an extremely fine condition.
