Germany, BDM. A Rare BDM Leather Climbing Jacket

(Bund Deutscher Mädel Kletterweste in Leder). A rare and unusual League of German Girls (BDM) Kletterweste (climbing jacket), constructed of brown leather. Composed of multiple pieces, it is joined together at the seams with heavy machine stitching. It features a turned-down collar which transitions into double breast lapels, with the left lapel retaining a period stick pin, constructed of bronze with enamels and measuring 20 mm (w) x 20 mm (h). Stitched onto the upper left arm is an insignia consisting of a black rayon triangle bearing a machine-embroidered silver-grey inscription of “SÜD BAYR. OSTMARK”, for the BDM district of Süd Bayerische Ostmark. It measures 100 mm (w) x 45 mm (h). Directly underneath this the unit attribution is an additional insignia consisting of a multi-coloured, machine-embroidered HJ logo measuring 52 mm (w) x 90 mm (h). Each breast flap features two pockets, with the upper pockets closing with scalloped horizontal flaps with reinforced buttonholes meeting bakelite BDM/JM buttons. The lower pockets close with functional non-magnetic metal zippers set on horizontal tracks. The jacket closes with five brown bakelite HJ/BDM-style buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left. The latter are also flanked by an additional five identical buttons. Completing the exterior features are dual integrated belts set into the lower half of the reverse, both fastening with functional magnetic metal buckles. The interior is fully encompassed by a light brown wool liner with a single pocket located at the upper left breast. Stamped onto the interior of the pocket is an illegible maker’s mark. The jacket measures approximately 460 mm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 580 mm, and an overall body length of 590 mm when folded flat. Material fatigue consistent with age and regular use is evident throughout the leather, and there is additional wear to the interior liner. This unusual variant of a BDM climbing jacket is in an overall fair condition.
