A Luftwaffe Tropical Tunic by Walter Hartung Magdeburg

Fabricated from a thick khaki cotton twill, with both shoulders adorned with cotton enlisted man's shoulder straps trimmed in brown piping, indicating Air Communications Corps (Signals). Each of the straps is held in place by a large brown finished zinc button with a pebbled upper, maker marked with an "M" inside a rotated square on their reverses, as are all the zinc buttons on the tunic. The front has four pockets sewn in place to the body of the tunic, smaller ones on each breast and larger ones on either side below at the waist, both breast pockets with a decorative pleat, all four pockets with a fold over flap and reinforced button hole for the large brown finished zinc buttons. Sewn in place over the right breast pocket is a Luftwaffe eagle in tan and khaki embroidery. The left breast pocket has two vertically-aligned horizontal loops in khaki threading on the pleat for placement of an award, that has since been lost to time. The front has a vertical row of six large brown finished zinc buttons on the right side, facing an equal number of reinforced button holes on the left side. There is a short strap with a reinforced button hole sewn in place near the collar opening on the right side, facing a brown plastic button on the left side and when joined together, ensure a snug fit at the neck. Both cuffs are single-vented and in the button down style, designed with two brown plastic buttons, facing an olive green cotton patch with a reinforced button hole for a snug fit at the wrist, the right cuff with both buttons intact, the left cuff missing one of its two buttons. Inside, there is a small olive green cotton pocket sewn in place beside the opening with a reinforced button hole and brown plastic button closure. There are olive green cotton reinforcing patches sewn in place in the armpits and behind the waist pockets, the ones in the armpits each with a strap, each strap with five reinforced holes that face three reinforced holes on the body of the tunic itself. The tunic is stamped on the left side behind the left breast pocket in black ink with the maker's name "Walter Hartung Magdeburg" and the acceptance markings, "92" surrounded by, clockwise from the upper left, "39, 44, 60, 66". The collar is marked in handwritten black ink "GC4" and "38", as well as housing a loop for hanging the jacket on a hook, the tunic measuring 430 mm across the shoulders and 600 mm in length overall. It exhibits wear on the collar, various large zinc buttons with scattered wear in the brown finish, light soiling overall, with intact stitching. Very fine.
