(Großherzoglich Sächsischer Hausorden vom Weißen Falken, Großkreuz). Issued 1815-1918. Consisting of 1) A Grand Cross Breast Star (Bruststern zum Großkreuz); consisting of a silver eight eight-pointed rayed star; the obverse with a central gold raised medallion with a small leftward facing white enameled falcon attached in the center, surrounded by a gold knurled ring and a wide blue enameled ring of enamels inscribed “VIGILANDO ASCENDIMUS” (Latin - We rise through watchfulness), surrounded by an additonal gold knurled ring - all superimposed on a gold green enameled Maltese cross; the reverse plain, with four rivets, with a vertical pinback and a functional hinge/catch assembly; marked “Th. Müller, Weimar” on the reverse; measuring 87.10 mm (w) x 87.76 mm (h); weighing 60.2 grams. 2) A Grand Cross for Civil Persons (Großkreuz für Zivilpersonen); a gold Maltese cross with green enameled arms with red enameled parallelograms between the arms of the cross with white enameled fleur-de-lis finals; the obverse with a large leftward facing white enameled falcon superimposed in the center; the reverse with a central gilt applique with bright blue enamels, inscribed “Vigilando Ascendimus” (Latin - We rise through watchfulness), with white enameled arms and with green enameled parallelograms between the arms of the cross with white enameled fleur-de-lis finals; suspended from a hollow swivel crown suspension, with a horizontally pierced ball and loop for suspension - with its secondary loop for attachment to the sash; measuring 49.26 mm (w) x 83.47 mm (h); weighing 31.6 grams; accompanied by its period original and full size sash ribbon; the enamels of the breast badge previously repaired on the bottom arm of the Maltese cross, as well as on the blue enameled ring; in overall better than extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
