Prussia, State. An Order of the Black Eagle, Embroidered Mantle Star, c.1820

(Hohe Orden vom Schwarzen Adler, Bruststern zum Kreuz des Ordens, gestickt). Instituted 17 January 1701. (1701-1918 Issue). A finely executed embroidered star in silver, with small eyelets at the ends of the rays, centre obverse presents a black embroidered eagle with crown, beak, eye, and claws completed in golden wire, clutching a wreath in green wool and thunderbolts in orange wire, (importantly the eagle is facing to its left thereby denoting that this is a Mantle Star for the left side of a horse blanket), bordered by a ring of golden embroidery bearing the motto SUUM CUIQUE (TO EACH HIS OWN) in golden thread embroidery, the lower half with laurel branches in green silk with fruits in orange-red wool, this ring is bordered inside and out with twisted silver wire, reverse centre presents a cardboard paper backing, measuring 102 mm (w) x 107 mm (h), weighing 21.1 grams, displays some loose threading at ends of star rays, and very fine.


This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
