Hesse-Darmstadt, Grand Duchy. A Campaign Decoration, 1840-1866
(Felddienstzeichen 1840-1866). Constructed of gilded bronze, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with a central monogram of Grand Duke Ludwig II, above an inscription of “GESTIFTET AM 14. JUNI 1840” (“INSTITUTED ON 14TH JUNE 1840”) and within a laurel and oak leaf wreath, the reverse with an inscription of “FÜR TREUEN DIENST IM KRIEGE” (“FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE IN WAR”), measuring 31.47 mm in diameter, weighing 18.7 grams, in near extremely fine condition.
