Hesse-Darmstadt. A Superb Cased 1914-1918 Issue Grand Commander’s Cross and Breast Star

This is a superb grouping of an extremely fine quality manufacture cased 1914-1918 issue Hesse-Darmstadt Grand Commander’s Cross and Breast Star Grouping (Orden Stern von Brabant Großkomturkreuz mit Türkisen und Bruststern zum Großkomturkreuz mit Türkisen); the cross in the form of a silver gilt cross pattée with rounded ends, with a gilt eight-pointed seated directly on-top; the obverse with the arms of the cross in blue enamels, with two turquoise balls in-between each of the arms of the cross, as well as a single turquoise ball on-top of the eight-pointed star; the reverse with a central enameled medallion bearing the letter “H” for “Heinrich”, topped by the royal crown of Hesse; on a broad loop for suspension; accompanied by a correct replacement ribbon; measuring 56.77 mm x 62.20 mm; weighing 40.4 grams. The breast star in the form of a silver gilt cross pattée with rounded ends, with a gilt eight-pointed seated directly on-top; the obverse with the arms of the cross in blue enamels, with two turquoise balls in-between each of the arms of the cross as well as sun rays, as well as a single turquoise ball on-top of the eight-pointed star; the reverse with a vertical pin and a functional hinge/catch assembly; measuring 68.65 mm x 68.12 mm; weighing 54.4 grams. The case is constructed of thick pressed paper with a black faux leather (leatherette) exterior; embossed “Stern von Brabant”, “Großkomtur mit Türkisen”, along with an outline of a Brabant Star and the Hesse coat of arms in gold on the exterior of the lid; lined interior lid, with a recessed medal bed; functional spring catch with stud release; fully intact interior fabric hinge cover; functional exterior metal hinge; measuring 124 mm x 219 mm; light loss of silvering on the reverse of the cross from age; the case with light scuffing to the exterior from storage; in overall near mint condition. "

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
