Hesse-Kassel, Landgraviate. An Order of the Golden Lion, Grand Cross, 1772, Published

(Hausorden vom Goldenen Löwen). Instituted on 14 August 1770 by Count Friedrich II of Hesse-Cassel. An extremely early and rare example of the Golden Lion, having been outlined and illustrated in Orden 1700-2000 by Karsten Klingbeil 2008. A privately manufactured sash badge, illustration No.926, page 281 of the publication, in fire gilt copper, consisting of a central Hessian lion rampant, obverse circumscribed by an inscription of “VIRTUTE ET FIDELITATE” (“VIRTUE AND FIDELITY”), featuring the exact and likely unique early date of issue 1772, reverse circumscribed by an inscription of “FRIEDERICUS.II.D.G.HASSIÆ. - LANDGRAVIUS INSTITUIT”, measuring 40.69 mm (w) x 55.39 mm (h), weighing 29.6 grams, on early 19th Century silk sash, very fine. Accompanied by the equally early star of the order, obverse centre presenting a unusual right facing Hessian lion on a blue field, encircled by a carmine-red surround bearing the motto VIRTUTE ET FIDELITATE (FOR VIRTUE AND FAITH), measuring 90.63 mm (w) x 91.65 mm (h), with fading of colours, otherwise near very fine.
