Hesse-Darmstadt, Grand Duchy. An Order of Philip the Magnanimous, Miniature II Class Knight, c.1880
(Orden Philipps des Großmüthigen, Ritterkreuz 1. Klasse). Instituted 1 May 1 1840. Type II. (1859-1918 Issue.) A white-enameled cross pattée in Gold, the obverse with a light blue enameled medallion bearing the leftward facing bust of Philip the Magnanimous in Gold, surrounded by a white enameled ring with a inscription of “SI DEUS NOBISCUM, QUIS CONTRA NOS” (“IF GOD IS WITH US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US?”), the reverse with an analogous medallions bearing a red and white enameled Hessian lion rampant on a blue enameled background, surrounded by a white enameled ring with a gilt inscription of “LUDOVICUS II MAGN DUX HASSIAE INSTIT” (“INSTITUTED BY LUDWIG II, GRAND DUKE OF HESSE”), measuring 15.54 mm (w) x 19.36 mm (h - inclusive of integral ring), weighing 2.2 grams, extremely fine.
