Bavaria, Kingdom. An Order of Theresa in Gold, ca. 1890
(Theresienordern in Gold). Instituted 12 December 1827 by Queen Theresa. (1827-1923 issue). An exquisite Order of Theresa, constructed of Gold with multi-coloured enamels, consisting of a Maltese Cross with a Gold frame, joined together through the quadrants by diamond appliques presenting with a checkered blue and white enameled pattern, the arms finished with blue enamels trimmed with white enamel along the borders, the obverse bearing a central white enameled medallion overlaid by a raised Gold monogram of Queen Theresa, within a ring of white enamel bearing hand-painted green flowers, the reverse bearing a central white enameled medallion overlaid by a gilt institution date of “1827”, within a ring of white enamel bearing a gilt inscription of “UNSER IROENLEREN SEI GLAUBE AN DAS EWIGE” (“OUR EARTHLY LIFE IS FAITH IN THE ETERNITY”), the twelve o’clock arm topped by a hollow Gold crown suspension culminating in a loop which connects to a period original length of ribbon, unmarked, measuring 40.76 mm (w) x 65.14 mm (h) (inclusive of crown suspension), weighing 25.9 grams, a striking example in an extremely fine condition.
