Bavaria, Kingdom. An Exquisite Merit Order of St. Michael, Grand Cross Star with Case, by Eduard Quellhorst, c.1860
(Königreich Bayern Verdienstorden vom heiligen Michael). Instituted on 16 February 1837 by Ludwig I. (1837-1918 Issue). An eight-pointed silver star bearing a cross pattée in Gold, attached to the star via four strong rivets, showing the silver letters PFFP (PRINCIPI FIDELIS FAVERE PATRIA) in its arms, the obverse centre presents a blue-enamelled medallion, presenting the Gold inscription QUIS UT DEUS, framed by a diamond-cut silver frame, the same silver diamond design borders the cross, the reverse presents a principal vertical pin assembly, maker marked JUWELIER U. GOLDARBEITER EDUARD QUELLHORST IN MÜNCHEN, measuring 91.00 mm (w) x 91.00 mm (h), weighing 63.0 grams, and in mint condition, accompanied by a period original case of issue, constructed of black leatherette, interior lined in white satin, presenting a light-blue velvet slotted medal bed, with two functional clasps, measuring 10.9 cm (w) x 10.9 cm (l), displaying moderate scuffing, and in near very fine condition, accompanied by an Authentication and Appraisal provided by Medalnet Appraisal Services, dated 10 December 2018, signed by Andreas M. Schulze Ising and Bernd Kruse.
