Germany, Reichsbahn. An Official’s Visor Cap by Carl Bangert

(Reichsbahn Schirmmütze für Beamte). A well-preserved Reichsbahn Official’s visor cap, constructed smooth dark blue wool with a black wool cap band. Red piping trims the crown, as well as the top and bottom of the cap band. Pinned into the peak of the cap is a zink insignia in the form of Reichsbahn-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. The insignia retains its dual reverse attachment prongs, measures 60 mm (w) x 38 mm (h), and is marked on the reverse with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M1/111” for Gebrüder Gloerfeld Metallwarenfabrik KG, Lüdenscheid. Underneath the insignia, the cap band bears a tri-colour cockade flanked by stylized pebbled and feathered wings, joined together by a wheel. The band insignia measures 150 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). The cap is flanked by gilded, pebbled magnetic metal buttons securing in place a decorative chinstrap constructed of multiple rows of interwoven gold and dark blue cord. The exterior features complete with a protruding blackened vulcanfibre visor, securely set into the structure of the cap. The interior is features a complete brown leather sweatband 45 mm in width, and is fully lined with a brown oilcloth liner. Stitched onto the crown is a transparent plastic moisture guard, underneath which is a maker’s mark inscribed “CARL BANGERT, KOBLENZ”, along with a black ink size stamp of “57”. The cap demonstrates some material fatigue to the exterior wool, with loss of finish evident to the zink insignia, distortion of the cap structure, and material fatigue to the sweatband and interior liner. It is in an overall very fine condition.
