A Bavarian Infantry Regiments and Pioneer Battalions Enlisted Man's Pickelhaube
This pickelhaube is produced from black leather, relatively smooth to the touch, the exterior stitching remaining intact. It has brass fittings, which includes the spike with five ventilation holes, a circular spike mounting base with four capped brass pins, rear spine with functional ventilation shutter and front visor trim. The five ventilation holes at the base of the spike and rear spine with ventilation shutter is indicative of a post 1895 manufactured pickelhaube. A replacement leather chin strap rests upon the visor, with two silvered metal buckles, both of which are magnetic. There is a three-colour cockade of Imperial Germany on the right side and a blue and silver cockade representing Bavaria on the left side, each with original pins connecting to the leather chin strap. The die-stamped bronze Bavarian helmet plate illustrates two outward facing lions holding the crowned Bavarian coat-of-arms, the arms bearing a silvered bronze traditional Bavarian diamond-patterned shield fronting a cross, the lions standing upon a ribbon banner below inscribed "In Treue Fest" (With Faith). The inside is lined in brown leather, complemented by its black leather liner, the liner with nine tabs, the ends of the liner sewn together at the rear, each tab with a hole near their ends for the feeding of the leather drawstring, the ends of which are tied together at the rear. The left rear of the dome is stamped with a faded "HANS RÖMER NEU-ULM" maker's mark. It measures 165 mm x 230 mm x 200 mm in height, the exterior exhibiting crazing throughout, especially on the front visor and rear neck guard, with three vertical cracks present on the neck guard, the black leather liner intact with only moderate wear on along its edge, wear and spotting evident on the brass fittings, two dents on the front visor trim, the rear spine having separated slightly from the body of the pickelhaube, with normal wear evident overall, intact stitching, original hardware, fine craftsmanship. As worn. (C:4)
