Description
Description
A Wehrpaß, measuring 105x147mm, extremely fine condition with light scuffing; a Gesundheitsbuch (health book), measuring 147x206mm, near extremely fine condition with some scuffing and wrinkling. The Wehrpaß is dated to Fürth (Franconia) on June 23, 1941 and signed by a Colonel and Commander of the Army District Fürth, the name is indecipherable. It is issued to Johann Georg Heinlein, however he signed it Ernst Heinlein.
Footnote: Johann Georg Heinlein was born on March 6, 1923 in Honings (today a district of Hetzles near Forchheim, Franconia), where he learned to become a gardener. He was first mustered on June 23, 1941 and found capable of garrison duty at the home front. After a second physical on September 26, 1941 he was deemed suitable for garrison duty in the field. The doctor attested knock-knees, a hernia disposition, and most of all a chronic inner ear illness that had resulted in hardness of hearing. Heinlein was not yet drafted into service. That happened on April 15, 1942 when he was deployed to the 4th Company of Infantry Replacement Battalion 21, then to the Marching Company and later Core Company of Infantry Training Battalion 21. In November he was redeployed to the 4th Company of Grenadier Training Battalion 21, on May 1, 1943 he was promoted to Gefreiter (Lance Corporal), and then served in the 4th Company of Grenadier Reserve Battalion 21 from July 1943 to March 1944. The unit was stationed in northern Croatia. During this period, Heinlein had to be admitted to the Reserve Military Hospital III in Erlangen. In November he had developed middle ear purulence, a condition that he had experienced chronically since childhood. After his recovery, he had to undergo unrelated surgery of the thyroid and having parts of it removed. Heinlein then developed a fever and suffered from impaired vision in January of 1944. At first his doctor suspected multiple sclerosis, by March however Heinlein was back on his feet, so the doctor decided it was an inflammation of the spine (myelitis). Afterwards, until September, Heinlein was part of the 2nd Convalescence Company, before being transferred to the collection point (Auffangstelle) Erlangen, where he stayed until the end of October to be redeployed. He was then briefly stationed with the 1st Company of Landschutz Battalion 624, before being placed in the 3rd Company of Landesschützen Battalion 847 in November 1944.
