An Iron Cross 1st Class certificate (139x199mm, better than very fine) to Unteroffizier (NCO) Scheuringer, dated to May 11, 1941. It is signed in black ink by General Field Marshal, Chief of Aerial Fleet 3, and Commander-in-Chief West, Hugo Sperrle (1885–1953), a recipient of the Knight’s Cross, and first commander of the Condor Legion.
An Iron Cross 2nd Class certificate (139x199mm, better than very fine) to NCO Scheuringer, dated to April 26, 1941. It is signed (signature has almost completely faded) by the Commanding General of the 5th Air Corps, General der Flieger Robert Ritter von Greim (1892–1945), later General Field Marshal and last Commander of the Luftwaffe, a recipient of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords and the Pour le Mérite.
A promotion certificate (210x147mm, very fine), stating that NCO Scheuringer, POW in Canada, is being promoted to Feldwebel (Sergeant), starting November 1, 1942. It is dated to Berlin on February 15, 1943.
A Front Flying Clasp for Fighter Pilots in Bronze certificate (147x210mm, extremely fine) to NCO Scheuringer of 8th Squadron of Fighter Wing 55. It is dated to May 13, 1941 and signed in blue crayon by Oberstleutnant (Lieutenant Colonel) and Wing Commodore Benno Kosch
(1900–1975), a recipient of the Knight’s Cross.
An accompanying letter to Scheuringer’s father, Sepp (210x148mm, extremely fine). It is dated to September 24, 1941 and signed in pencil by a Hauptmann (Captain) and Squadron Leader, his name is indecipherable. The certificate had to be sent to Scheuringer’s father, since Scheuringer, at this point, had already been shot down and taken prisoner.
A certificate for the Air Gunner Badge (211x297mm, extremely fine) to Obergefreiter (Corporal) Scheuringer. The document is dated to Berlin on November 15, 1940 and carries a facsimile of a Lieutenant General and Chief of the Luftwaffe Personnel Department, his name is
indecipherable.
A Flugbuch (flight log) (210x147mm, near extremely fine) with detailed mission information, dated to November 30, 1939. The first flights are training flights in late 1939, followed by missions to Britain, mostly from Villacoublay, south of Paris, in the spring of 1941. Targets are
named: Birmingham, Bristol, Belfast, London, Plymouth, Liverpool, Sheffield. The final mission, no. 47, is marked as a special operation, dated to May 12, 1941. The entry reads: “Vom Flug nicht zurückgekehrt.” (Didn’t return from mission.)
A DRL Sports Badge in Bronze certificate (4 p., 147x208mm, better than very fine). The document is dated to POW camp 23, Canada on July 28, 1943. The decoration was awarded on October 19, 1944.
A notice from the German Red Cross (145x207mm, near extremely fine) to Michael Wimmer, the father of Sergeant Willi Wimmer, killed in action when the plane carrying him, Scheuringer, and others was shot down. Wimmer was the pilot, Scheuringer served as the plane’s mechanic. The Red Cross informs Wimmer’s father of the location of Wimmer’s grave on the Isle of Wight. The document is dated to April 10, 1942.
Six POW camp sports certificates (279x379mm, extremely fine) to Scheuringer, winning or placing in different running competitions. All documents are dated to July or September of 1942, they all carry signatures of Camp Leader Riewer, and an Oberfeldwebel (Senior
Sergeant) and Sports Leader, his name is indecipherable, and have a Canadian stamp on the reverse.

Scheuringer is listed as a member of more than 20 years and club champion of 1947, 1948, 1952 to 1954, and 1956. Several wins at other championships have also been won by Scheuringer, starting in 1938 and continuing in the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s.

Footnote: Karl Scheuringer was born on March 22, 1919. He grew up in Austria to become an avid kayaker, competing at national levels as early as 1938. During the war, he served in the Luftwaffe as an in-flight mechanic. Scheuringer was stationed outside of Paris from where he flew missions to Britain during the “Blitz”. His unit, Fighter Wing 55 “Greif”, was involved in this campaign of nightflight bombing missions over Great Britain from first to last operation. Scheuringer was part of the 8th Squadron of the 3rd Group when his plane was shot down on May 12, 1941. Only a day prior to this, he had received the Iron Cross 1st Class. The next day, he would be awarded the Front Flying Clasp in Bronze. Scheuringer and the gunner, Lance Corporal Karl Röhl were the only survivors. Observer Senior Lieutenant Horst Gündel, pilot
Sergeant Willy Wimmer, and radio operator Sergeant Heinrich Neuber died. Scheuringer was first listed as missing in action, but eventually it became evident that he had survived and brought to a POW camp in Canada. He spent the rest of the war in captivity, most of it
in POW camp 23 in Monteith, Iroquois Falls, Ontario, a camp with a maximum capacity of 4,000. After the war, Scheuringer returned to Austria where he continued his successful kayaking career.
