Item: Award/memento book for worker Karl Köngeter, 22.8 x 17 cm, 26 pp. Date of item: ca. 1938/9 Condition: very good, some signs of aging; An award book for worker Karl Köngeter that also serves as a memento for his efforts in helping to secure German borders in the late 1930s. He helped build the Siegfried line, in German better known as the “Westwall”, and was stationed in Offenburg in southern Germany near the French border. The cover shows an engraved image of an Imperial Eagle with wings spread, standing on a wreath of oak leaves with a swastika inside. The book contains several signed recognitions of the workers’ efforts, by Hitler, leader of the Deutsche Arbeitsfront (German Labour Front) Robert Ley, Commander-in-Chief of the army Walther von Brauchitsch, and Inspector General for German Roadways Fritz Todt. It also features 14 drawings depicting scenes from the building projects. Inserted in the book is a card on which the German Labour Front wishes merry christmas to all workers of the Siegfried line. 15 x 10.5 cms.
