Footnote: Richard Bartylla was born on 5 October 1914 in Bolko, Oppeln County. He initially served in the Wehrbezirkskommando Zwittau, remaining in the district util February 1942. He was transferred to Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon 164 in Metz, with this assignment spanning the period between March and September 1942. In September, he was once again transferred, this time to Schützen und Jäger Feldausbildungs Kompanie 9/369, attached to Grenadier-Regiment 639, assigned to Army Group North as part of 388. Feldausbildungs-Division. The unit was primarily engaged in anti-partisan activities. On 1 December 1943, Bartylla was assigned to Aufklärungs-Abteilung 28, part of Jäger-Division 28, on the periphery of the Siege of Leningrad. On 16 January 1944, Bartylla suffered a lung injury caused by grenade shrapnel, and was hospitalized away from the front. Returning to his unit in April 1944, Bartylla saw further action against the Soviets in the Baltics and Belarus. From November 1944, the division was pushed northward through Poland and East Prussia, taking part in the final defence of Königsberg before surrendering to Soviet forces on 8 May 1945. Bartylla survived and was taken into Soviet captivity.
