Germany, Luftwaffe. An Early War Private Photo Album
(Luftwaffe Fotoalbum). An extremely well-preserved private wartime Luftwaffe photo album, constructed of a card stock binding with a textured faux leather exterior liner. The exterior of the covers bears an insignia in the form of a silvered zink Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika. Both the obverse and reverse of the spine are perforated with dual holes, reinforced with magnetic metal eyelets, through which is looped a drawstring maintaining the structure of the album. The interior contains 24 black card stock pages, each divided by a wax paper insert bearing spider web designs. It features 162 original black-and-white photos. Approximately the first third of the album depicts the owner with Luftwaffe personnel training, on maneuvers, and at leisure. The album then transitions into wartime scenes depicting Luftwaffe personnel in the field, with towns displaying bomb damage. The owner appears to have initially served in France, with photos of Mont-Saint-Michel and the Atlantic coast. It then transitions into a group of photos of Wehrmacht funerals, with further depictions of Luftwaffe personnel at leisure. It completes with a number of photographs of the Balkan campaign, including four pages of photographs taken in Greece. The reverse of the interior bears a maker’s label reading “C.F. ZELLER, MÜNCHEN”. It measures 310 mm (w) x 218 mm (h). The album presents fully intact, with no photos missing and only minor age-related material fatigue. It is in an overall extremely fine condition.
