It contains a handwritten note from the captain, stating that Matthiessen left the ship in Stettin on April 9. The two documents concerning the takeover of the occupied Eastern territories’ military and civil administration by the SS are a transcript of a classified telegram dated to February 22, 1945, and a letter to Matthiessen (as Landesverwaltungspräsident in Courland) from SS-Gruppenführer Hermann Behrends (1907–1948), who signed it in blue ink. The appointment order to Armament Inspectorate Ostland includes several men, among them Matthiessen. It is dated to February 10, 1942. The invite to an “especially important matter” was sent by the commissioner for the Four Year Plan, department of food. The letter is marked confidential and states that appearing personal is of the utmost importance. It is dated to May 20, 1941. The event takes place from June 4 to 7. The letter is signed by Herbert Backe (1896–1947), who was responsible for implementing the so called Hunger Plan after the attack on Russia. This was most certainly the main topic during the meeting. The six documents concerning Matthiessen’s appointment to Kriegsverwaltungs-Abteilungschef/Kriegsverwaltungsvicechef by the Supreme Command of the Heer include the following: a marching order for appointment to War Administration Department Chief (Kriegsverwaltungs-Abteilungschef) for Armament Inspectorate 10, Hamburg, dated to May 31, 1941. A transcript stating that Matthiessen should actually have been made War Administration Vice Chief (Kriegsverwaltungsvicechef), and thus will need a new uniform. It is dated to June 17, 1941. A transcript of said transcript. An order to the Douaumont military barracks in Hamburg-Wandsbek to give Matthiessen his new uniform, dated to June 20, 1941. With transcript. The official appointment to Kriegsverwaltungsvicechef, effective June 7, 1941, dated to August 2, 1941. He had to repay over 4000 Reichsmark, which he did. The NSDAP insurance card contains stamps on the reverse for every fee that Matthiessen paid. The card is dated to May 8, 1931. The Leader House (Führerhaus) Dithmarschen membership card is most likely for a district NSDAP leaders club. It is numbered “1”, presumably because Matthiessen was the district leader of Dithmarschen. The invitation by Reich Farmers Leader Darré was sent to Transregional Farmers Leader (Landesbauernführer) Matthiessen, asking for the pleasure of his company and sharing a glass of beer on December 15, 1938. A handwritten note reads “Herbert Backe Staatssekretär” (State Secretary), ultimately Darré’s replacement. However, it does not seem to be his signature. The seven documents concerning the 1st and 2nd Reich Farmers Day meeting 1934 include: an invitation by Reich Farmers Leader Darré to attend the inauguration of the Reich Famers Council on April 14/15, 1934, dated to April 4. The Nordmark meeting honour card serves as admission card to any events during the function. The meeting took place on May 25/26, 1935 in Kiel. The letter by a man from France concerning the World Exhibition in Paris is dated to September 22, 1937. The man, Fernand Klee, regrettably informs Matthiessen that he can’t meet him due to military duties in Strasbourg. The letter is written in French. It comes with a business card. The resigning document from the protestant church is dated to March 28, 1939.
Footnote: Martin Matthiessen was born on February 26, 1901 in Wesselburenerkoog (northern Germany). After finishing school he became a farmer. He was a member of at least one Free Corps (Freikorps). On July 1, 1928 Matthiessen joined the NSDAP. Around the same time he also became a member of the SA. Matthiessen quickly became a successful local politician, serving as Ortsgruppenleiter (Local Group Leader) in the Ortsgruppe Wesselburen, his hometown, between November 1928 and August 1929. During this time he is known to have served in the SA Sturm 16 and then SA Sturm 14, Standarte 5 Nordmark. In July of 1929 Matthiessen became NSDAP Kreisleiter (District Leader) of Kreis Süderdithmarschen. In October 1931 he first became a member of the Reichstag, which he remained until the end of the war. In 1933 he was appointed State Commissioner for the Chamber of Agriculture of Schleswig-Holstein, as well as Transregional Chairman for the Farmers Community of Schleswig-Holstein. At an unknown time during the mid or late 1930s he served as an honorary SS leader in the SS Race and Settlement Main Office. He was promoted to SS-Standartenführer on April 20, 1939, and two years later to SS-Oberführer. Matthiessen played a vital part in the economic exploitation of the occupied Eastern Territories. Judging from the documents, particularly the “important matter” he attended in May of 1941, he was informed of the planned attack on Russia weeks before it was carried out. Presumably, he also knew about the plans for the Russian civilians. In June of 1941 Matthiessen was appointed War Administrative Vice Chief with the Economic Inspectorate “North”, as well as Department Leader Economics with the Reich Commissioner for the Eastern Territories, stationed in Riga (Latvia). As such he was instrumental in the plundering of the region, including agricultural products, machinery, assets etc. In 1942 he became the leader of the Courland civil administration. This position allowed him to obtain permits to leave the Courland pocket in early April 1945. Although the papers state that he was on his way to Berlin, it is clear that all he did was fleeing back home, mainly to avoid captivity by the Russians. After the war Matthiessen was detained by the British until 1948. He died on May 14, 1990.
