(Орден "Свети Александър”). Instituted on 25 December 1881. Type 2. (Issued 1881-1947). A silver gilt Maltese cross consisting of a white enameled cross pattée, centre obverse as red-enamelled medallion with the name of the Order inscribed in gilded letters, surrounded by a white circle with the motto “СЪ НАМИ БОГЪ” (“God with us”) inscribed, with two laurel branches underneath, reverse a white background with the inscription “19 ФЕВРАЛЪ 1878” (“18 February 1878”), atop the cross is a royal crown, measuring 37.99 mm x 67.99 (h - inclusive of crown suspension), weighing 34.2 grams, with enamel chipping on reverse centre medallion and on imperial crown, on loop suspension from period original triangle ribbon with rosette, and in overall better than very fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
