Austria, Imperial. Four Imperial First War Period Badges

(Kappenabzeichen). A group of four First War period badges, including a German/Austrian 11th Army badge, at the centre in relief are Franz Joseph I and Wilhelm II, the inscription reads Mit Vereinter Kraft! (Joined Together in Strength!) and across the top are the words 1914 WELTKRIEG 1915, reverse shows a vertical pinback, maker marked BILDHAUER GURSCHNER WIEN VII/2, measures 25.84 mm (w) x 36.56 mm (h), and in fine condition. A 3rd Army cap badge, the obverse depicts an alpine scene with soldiers in the foreground (depicting their offensive in the Carpathian), with the inscription KARPATHEN above, at the base is an oval plaque bearing the inscription DURCHHALTEN 3.ARMEE 1914 1915, with leaf motifs emanating from the side, reverse presents two prongs, with evidence of period repair, maker marked ENTW.F.SWOBODA BILDH.GURSCHNER WIEN VII/2, measuring 28.76 mm (w) x 40.42 mm (h), and in very fine condition. An Austrian cap badge, the obverse presents the a black-enamelled Maltese cross over the Austrian double-headed eagle and the dates 1915 1916, circumscribed by a green-enamelled wreath constructed of laurel leaves to the left and oak leaves to the right, surmounted by the coat of arms, reverse presents a horizontal pinback, unmarked, measuring 23.59 mm (w) x 34.61 mm (h), and in extremely fine condition. A 1914-1916 badge featuring a mother holding a child, broken pinback, measures 21.72 mm (w) x 30.25 mm (h), and in poor condition.


This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
